As the Anti-Japanese War started, the central government moved the capital to Chongqing at the end of1937and Sichuan became the the main rear base of Anti-Japanese War. After the sudden death of Liu Xiang, the former chairman of Sichuan Province, Sichuan plunged into turmoil once again. In order to ensure the stability of Sichuan, Chiang Kai-shek appointed some central officials to take charge of Sichuan. However, those officials all be rejected and Chiang Kai-shek had to personally concurrently hold the position of chairman of Sichuan Province finally.To explore how Chiang Kai-shek handled the relationship between the central government and local faction in the background of Anti-Japanese War, this paper intends to center around the theme of the causality, process and aftermath of Chiang Kai-shek’s administration in Sichuan, combing the implementation of policies of Chiang Kai-shek and his influences to the construction of Sichuan Province and even the entire rear area of the Anti-Japanese War. What’s more, this paper also focuses on the attitude of central government and the public opinions, combined with the files of Chiang Kai-shek, the memoirs of the KMT officials, newspapers and other historical materials, by which we parse the role Chiang Kai-shek played in Sichuan as the chairman of Sichuan. At the same time, there is no question that the concurrent positions of Chiang Kai-shek in Sichuan came out of the emergency of helpless, which did not effectively solve the contradiction between the central and Sichuan and also did not achieve the purpose of the effective control of Sichuan. Along with the capital moved back to Nanjing, the central government lost its control to Sichuan.
