On The Study Of Translating Process From The Intertextual Theory

According to the intertextual theory created by Kristeva in1960s, all the texts are the transformation of other texts. References among texts form a huge textual net. With the author’s own translating practice, this paper describes and studies the main translating process (understanding process and expressing process). Combed the categorizations of intertextuality, the author divided the intertextuality into two parts:the intratextualization and the extratextualization. The former is discussed from two aspects:understanding process from the intratextuality and expressing process from the intratextuality. While according to different objects, the extrantextuality in translation can be divided into extratextuality between source text and target text, extratextuality between source text and other texts, and extratextuality between target text and other texts. Extratextuality concludes all contexts, such as political context, economic context, social context, historical context or psychological context, and all the contexts form the intertextual texts.The theoretical framework of this paper has been tentatively established on the intertextual theory. That is, applying intertextual theory through the whole translating process and proving intertextual translation is the intertextual conversion from the source language to the target language rather than the isolate translation from sound, word, sentence and passage. This paper mainly applies the case analysis method which is describing the intertextual translating process in details through the description and analysis of the texts.This paper is based on the translating practice of the author, standing on the angle of translator to do the intertextual analysis on the translating process, so it is not suitable to discuss the translating process on the readers’point of view. Perhaps in the future, an investigation about influences of intertextual translated versions and non-intertextual translated versions among readers is better. In spite of the limitations of this essay, there are also some theoretical and practical implications. It broadens the prospect of studying and to my knowledge it is a study by combining the theory of intertextuality and translating process together, and refining researching units of the translating process. This paper pays more attention on the dynamic translating process rather than simply comparing the static translated versions.
