Put forward by Julia Kristeva, intertextuality compounds the immanent relationships between texts by emphasizing that a text is not self-existent, but from its inter-texts and the whole social cultural knowledge system. Intertextuality is the essential nature of all texts. Roland Barthes breaks up the traditional textual concept and broadens it to social cultural context. Thorough understanding of intertextual signals calls for finding corresponding intertextual reference by putting intertextual signals in social cultural framework. The continuing study based on this foundation has furnished intertextuality with relatively sound theoretical system. Hatim and Mason are the first to infuse intertextuality into translation studies. The textuality of translation and both synchronic and diachronic level of translation studies share some similarities with intertextuality, which serves as a brand new perspective for translation studies.Firstly this thesis conducts the study on translation of intertextuality based on the classification of intratextuality and extratextuality. And then contrastive criticism will be made on the translation of intertextuality in Goldblatt’s English version of Life and Death are Wearing Me Out from the perspective of switching of intertextual reference and actualization of intertextual intentionality. The study indicates that translator should take into account the preservation of intertextual intentionality of the original text, actualizing the intertextual intentionality in C-E translation through construction of corresponding intertextual context in target language and grasp of cultural gap between Chinese and English.
