In the study of western ethics, happiness is a very important category in ethics.From ancient Greece to philosophers of happiness research and debate, to modernphilosophic people get a faction of the happiness theory, utilitarian happiness with itsunique utilitarianism permeate the concept of happiness, in the modern developmentof Western thought of happiness has extensive and far-reaching influence.John Stuart mill is a classical utilitarianism ethics important representative figure,is the epitome of utilitarianism. On the utilitarian happiness, he tries to solve theutilitarianism theory about how to solve the self-interest and seek the greatesthappiness for the most people the contradiction between. Mil in the inheritance andtransformation of Bentham hedonism, and absorb the duty theory, puts forward itsutilitarian happiness: to distinguish the quality and quantity of happiness, happinesswill be extended the connotation of the concept of virtue; the same utilitarianhappiness, rationality emphasizes sacrifice oneself; moral sanctions--conscienceforce further unified, personal happiness the greatest happiness and social happiness.He discussed the happiness theory is more reasonable and acceptable, this paper is toexplain the mill "s utilitarianism theory of happiness and the value of modern ethicsfrom the perspective of ethics.This paper is divided into four parts. The first part, mainly reviews historicalorigins of utilitarian theory of happiness. Happiness theory can be traced back toancient Greek Democritus, Cyrenaica School and Epicurus. The modern Rock, Humeand Helvetius preliminary proposed some have the tendency of utilitarianism thought.Of course, the most profound impact on Mill’s utilitarianism is established byBentham. As can be seen from this part of history, he thought the concept ofhappiness from the important part. The second part has a detailed analysis of the millon the utilitarianism happiness theory revision. The modified content mainly includesthe happy essence, the principle of happiness and realization ways of happiness. Thethird part, discusses the new comprehension of the utilitarianism happiness theory onthe mill, and proposed the greatest happiness of Moral Sanction--conscience, justice,virtue is the means to pursuit happiness. The fourth part, expound the valuation aboutmill’s happiness theory, as well as its revelation to us.
