John Stuart Mill is a famous person who epitomized the thought of the Utilitarianism.Based on the predecessors' study,John Stuart Mill displayed mounting irritation with the Classical Utilitarianism,especially the Utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham.John Stuart Mill introspects the fault of Jeremy Bentham and point out the defect of his theory.The theory of John Stuart Mill has a rich connotation:First of all,he pushes the happiness of Jeremy Bentham theory to a whole new level,believing that happiness is not only different in quantity but also in qualitative difference.Secondly,Mill believes that happiness is desirable and is the sole purpose of human behavior.Everyone has the right to pursue his "greatest happiness" without harming the rights of others and the legitimate expectation of happiness.Thirdly,John Stuart Mill says the Utilitarianism contains some Altruism,admitted to make some sacrifice for the happiness of others is meaningful.Finally,Mill argues that "the greatest happiness of the greatest number" is the moral standard that judges all actions right or wrong.Mill inherited the theory of Jeremy Bentham on the whole,adhered to the principle of utilitarianism,and responded to the theory that utilitarianism "is suitable only for pigs",which further improving the system of utilitarianism.Many scholars criticism of utilitarianism are based on misunderstanding and some utilitarian theories have deepened this misunderstanding.We can't deny that Mill's utilitarianism does have some limitations,such as the proof of the utilitarian principle,and the principle of the greatest happiness of utilitarianism ignores the question of "how the total amount can be distributed fairly among individuals",and in principle "the utilitarianism of Mill is no deny that can use some of the larger interests compensation others less loss,or worse,in order to make a lot of people to share larger interests and deprived of the freedom of a few people",and so on.John Stuart Mill's utilitarianism has spread to various fields such as politics,economy and culture,which has great influence on the social practice and development of human beings.As the ethical framework of modern social science,utilitarianism still has strong vitality even today.The purpose of this paper is to clarify the connotation of the Mill's Utilitarianism,reveals the ethical essence of its,and analyze the limitations and problems of John Stuart Mill's utilitarianism,attempts to make reasonable use of the utilitarianism.
