| This thesis attempts to analyze catchword from Verschueren’s adaptation theory, anddiscuss respectively from the physical world, social world and the mental world, for instance,as a kind of cultural carrier, why the catchword produces and its adaptive process in thepresent world, besides the catchword’s change, pragmatic effect and development trend.This thesis adopts qualitative research method, through collecting catchwords from thewebsite Global Language Monitor, it classifies catchwords and then researches them, so as toapply adaptation theory to explain the formation and development of catchwords.As a linguistic comprehensive view, pragmatics is no longer a branch of linguistics, butanalyze and study language usage from some perspectives such as language, society, culture,cognition and so on: that is to say language choice. The choice is because that language hasvariability, negotiability and adaptability, they are mainly manifested in contextual correlatesof adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience ofadaptation processes. As a result, the produce of catchwords can be explained and analyzedthrough adaptation theory.This research found that the generation of catchword is the adaptation to social status,psychology, culture and people’s daily life, it has the characteristics of timeliness,innovativeness, dynamics and so on, and become popular due to two aspects of society andlinguistics. In addition, in spreading catchword has pragmatic effect, also some changes, nomatter in motivation, content or effect. This research can help us to make a bettercomprehension of the development trend of catchword in the recent ten years, so as tounderstand the development of the times, people’s life and changes of language.Through the research, the author confirmed adaptation theory could be applied on thepragmatic analysis of the formation and development of catchwords, regardless of the cause,development or pragmatic effect. |
