As a special language form used in political occasions, diplomatic language plays a vital role in the country's diplomatic activities.Previous studies on diplomatic language mainly focuses on translation and fuzziness, and insufficient attention has been paid to the use of pragmatic presupposition strategies. This study takes the Adaptation Theory proposed by Verschueren as the theoretical basis, and selects 52 press conference hosted by spokesperson Hua Chunying from the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2019 as the corpus. And then, according to the classification of presupposition triggers proposed by Levinson in 2001,starting from the presupposition triggers at the lexical level and sentence level, this study deeply analyzes how the pragmatic presupposition strategies used by Hua Chunying in the press conference in 2019 realize the contextual adaptation from the psychological world, social world and physical world. Finally, starting from the purpose of the press conference hosted by the spokesperson Hua Chunying, this study analyzes the communicative functions of the pragmatic presuppositions used by the spokesperson from the perspective of the speaker, the country and the international community. The significance of the study is to broaden the scope of application of the Adaptation Theory, promote the interactive research of Adaptation Theory and pragmatic presupposition, and achieve its wider application. At the same time,it also hopes to provide a new research perspective for the strategy analysis of the press conference hosted by the spokesperson.
