British novelist George Orwell is well-known for his dystopian fiction1984, whichis divided into three parts. In the first part, it tells that people live a miserable life undertotalitarian rule; Political organization, social life and even individuals’ thought andprivacy, are under the control of “Big Brother”, people can’t live according to theirwishes. The second part tells that the protagonist Winston desire for freedom and fall inlove with Julia, he revolts against the rule of “Big Brother” both in thoughts and actions.The third part tells that the hero and heroine were found by the thought police. Theyeventually succumbed to “Big Brother” after a series of “transformation”, whichembodies the author’s satire of totalitarian rule.This paper, from the perspective of stylistics, analyzes people’s social life and thelanguage characteristics under totalitarian rule. First of all, from the perspective of words,when describing people’s social life, the whole language style is depressed and heavy.This forms bright contrast with hero and heroine’s conversation in date in the second part,which is clear and cheerful. Through the contrastive analysis of the use of words in thesetwo parts, it reflects people’s depressed life under totalitarian rule. At the same time, thetotalitarian invented “New Speak” to control the language and thought of people.Secondly, from the perspective of sentences, through the analysis of sentence types andsentence complexity, this article concludes that short sentences and simple sentences arefrequently used in the description of totalitarian rules. The rulers frequently useinterrogative sentences and conditional sentences, in order to enable people to achievepolitical identity. Finally, from the rhetorical perspective, this paper analyzes somewords and sentences from extended metaphors, oxymoron, and repetition perspectives, itcan make readers better understand the life of people and the state of desire for freedom.In this article, through analyzing George Orwell’s1984by using the relevanttheoretical knowledge of stylistics, it reflects the language characteristics undertotalitarianism. In addition to the traditional literary criticism methods, through therelevant theoretical knowledge of stylistics, analyzes literature language can make thereader a better understanding of literary works in different aspects. These are worth theattention of scholars and further deep research.
