Chinese art song has a history of about a hundred years. Its art value is obvious as it’s a good combination of music and literature. The development of art song can be divided into three time period:It has been brought in and drew lessons from precedents during the first20years before the foundation of the P.R.C. Then it goes through from its maturity to decline after the foundation of the P.R.C. Finally it enjoyed its recovering and boom from the1970s. This paper just put is time limit on the period of1920s-1940s as its main target.In this paper, the author focuses on the development of piano accompaniment of early Chinese art song before P.R.C is founded. Chapters I and II describes the historical background of the early art songs’formation as well as its footprints during its development, art song composers and their works of that period are also classified. Chapters III to VI are the main subjects of this paper. This paper begins its analysis from the writing style of piano accompaniment, then dive deep and conclude three kinds of the works from the technical aspect, specifically:harmony accompaniment texture works of art songs, polyphonic accompaniment texture works of art songs, the art song works with homophony and polyphony combined, and the usage of modern harmony in art song. The author hopes this paper can provide some reference to the development of Chinese art songs in teaching and researching aspects, and lay a solid theoretical and practical foundation for a more accurate understanding to the piano accompanist. Chapter VII of this paper give some comments on the historical value and significance of the art song from the aesthetic aspect.
