The author of this thesis makes an attempt to probe into Chinese-English translation of public signs in scenic spots from the perspective of functional approaches.With the rapid development of modern China and the reform and opening-up policy, more and more foreign friends come to China for sightseeing, commerce, communicating, studying and so on. Today, public signs play a very important role in communication. Therefore, the author will discuss the translations of public signs in scenic spots in this thesis. The writer mainly discusses the translation errors of public signs in scenic spots and puts forward translation strategies based on Skopos theory.Firstly, the writer goes to the introduction of this thesis. This part will introduce the background, significance, questions of this research and also the structure of this thesis. Secondly, an overview of public signs and the previous researches are,, introduced. Thirdly, the Skopos theory from German which is the theoretical basis of this thesis is introduced. Skopos theory is a very important theoretical guidance for translation. Some translation errors of public signs in scenic spots are pointed out. Based on these translation errors, some translation strategies are adopted including simplicity, adoption, paraphrase and so on. All these translation strategies are based on skopos theory and oriented on the purpose of translation and audience. In short, this thesis mainly discusses errors and strategies of C-E translations of public signs in scenic spots. It shows that the translation strategies should depend on the purpose of translation and the need of audience.
