The report is based on the author’s practice of translating excerpted parts fromThe Civilization of China written by Herbert A. Giles, who is an eminent scholarconcentrating on oriental culture and history.The whole report is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction tothe whole project, introducing a new translating software—MemoQ. Chapter Twomainly deals with the project process description including the selection of thetranslated contents; the preparations before translation, such as collection of paralleltexts and the compiling and aligning of the parallel corpus in MemoQ; the translationprocess and later modification. Chapter Three is the analysis of The Civilization ofChina including the brief introduction of the book—The Civilization of China and itswriter Herbert Allen Giles with an analysis of the stylistic features of the excerptedparts. Chapter Four deals with the application of parallel corpus in the translation ofThe Civilization of China(excerpts). On the one hand, the report discusses the parallelcorpus expressed by famous linguists—Baker, McEnery and Wilson. On the otherhand it also introduces how the parallel corpora play a role in MemoQ whentranslating. At lexical level, the translation of proper nouns and culture-loaded wordswill be explained. At stylistic level, the ancient poems, historical records andConfucian woks used in Chinese will be discussed. Chapter Five reaches a conclusionfor the translation project and the report.By creating the parallel corpora and its application in the translation process, theauthor hopes to offer some worthwhile reference to those translators who are engagedin translating books about Chinese civilization written by foreign writers.
