On The Image Of College Intellectuals In Twenty-first Century

Since the21th century college novels emerge in large numbers, the new college intellectualimages have become a focus in Chinese literary world. Based on analysis and detailedinterpretation about the novel’s artistic image and by means of relevant theoriesabout intellectuals, this thesis observes college intellectuals in the novels from the two aspects ofsocial and cultural environment and institutional system, explores their life and mental state, andanalyzes the expression appeal in college novels while writing those images. This thesis dividesinto three chapters.Chapter one discusses college intellectuals’ living and mental state from the angel ofsocial and cultural environment. The first part is an overview of the college intellectuals’ livingstate, namely the secularization tendency. The last part separately explains the collegeintellectuals’ living state, points out, analyzes their living circumstances in post-modern society,and explores their different moral practice. In general, the last part outlines intellectuals’dynamic life state in the spring tide of the market economy and college background.Chapter two discusses college intellectual’s mental state from novels in post-modernsociety. The first part outlines a marginalized mentality and mental state of the intellectualsin showing the status and prospects for the problem of self. First of all, the college intellectualshave not built a complete consensus with the national power system as the representative of thecolleges. Secondly, the western postmodernism and the consumer culture of the market economyimpacts the college intellectuals’ faith. The more and more professional school environment andthe knowledge structure is another factor. The elite culture is not the intellectual center any more.Then as the representative of elite culture, the college intellectuals experiencemarginalized spiritual experience. And they exist at the edge. The last part undertakes the firstpart. It discusses and analyze the college intellectuals the mental state of sink, searching andpersistence in the postmodern society, exploring their spiritual experience and process in thespirit quest road.Chapter three analyzes the pattern, attitude and hope to the college intellectuals in novels.The first part discusses a college intellectual’s narration, called ‘truth’ and ‘absurd’ which is binary opposition and unity. The second part analyzes the narrative form from irony to sympathythrough the changes to images in discourse attitude, and points out the discovery to collegeintellectuals in understanding and evaluation. The third part discusses the characteristicsof narrative characters of noble character in shaping the image of college intellectuals. Thenovels reflect sublime through abandoning ‘perfect’ form, pay attention to the collegeintellectuals’ life and mental state in modern society. It is a way of reflecting sublime in thereality.
