It has been twenty years since the freehand method was introduced into Chinese oil paintings. Through the efforts of the past generations of artists, this method has attracted a lot of attention in the artistic circle, and the development of freehand oil paintings never stops. Now we briefly introduce the framework of this thesis.Chapter one tries to clarify the definition of freehand style and the relationship between expression and impression.Chapter two discusses how the western oil paintings have influenced the development of freehand style in Chinese oil paintings. This problem is discussed from two aspects:the enlightenment from some early masters in the West like Ei Greco and Frans Hals, and the influence of Western contemporary aesthetics.Chapter three explains how traditional Chinese paintings have influenced contemporary Chinese freehand oil paintings. This problem is discussed from three aspects: first, the advocating of nature in Chinese philosophy; second, the expression of space in traditional Chinese paintings; third, the Chinese humanistic character and freehand spirit.Chapter four expounds the expression of contemporary Chinese freehand oil paintings, analyzing how the ideas and emotions are expressed in colors, how the vigor is embodied in strokes of pen, how the images reflect the attitude of artist, and how the perspective influences the formation of space.Chapter five is a conclusion, in which, we make some reflections on the freehand style in contemporary Chinese oil paintings in the hope of a resonance to this topic.
