Cognitive style theory is one of the main branches of cognitive psychological theories. It studies people’s activities from their inner cognitive psychological structures, which is very different from what behaviorism advocates. As one important dimension of individual differences, cognitive style has been a hot issue, especially for the aspect of the influence of cognitive styles on language learning, which is widely recognized as a complex process of cognitive construction. It is distinct that learners’ cognitive styles involve in the cognitive construction. In the process of language learning, learners would take advantage of various strategies. Language learning strategies differ from the general learning strategies. They are specific actions and skills that are adopted by language learners for promoting language learning, which has the characters of the general learning strategies, and contra pose the features of language learning. As the matter of fact, the learners who possess different cognitive styles tend to take advantage of different language learning strategies. In the thesis, the author did specific job in probing into the correlation between the FD/FI cognitive styles and language learning strategies, and exploring the learners’ preference of language learning strategies under different cognitive styles. And in the last part, the author tried to come up with a few suggestions on language teaching under the research findings. To be more specific, this thesis purposes to study the following aspects:(1) Do the field cognitive styles of learners have influence on choosing their language learning strategies?(2) What are the specific features of field cognitive styles distribution among language learners?(3) What are the specific characteristics of language learning strategies employment among language learners?(4) What implications can be got to apply in the language teaching? How do we improve the language teaching from the aspects of teaching methods, teaching materials and teaching tasks? In the study, author adopted quantitative and qualitative methods.150non-English major juniors from Sichuan Normal University took part in the present study. Two instruments were adopted to collect data, and they are GEFT (Group Embedded Figure Test) and language learning strategies questionnaires. The results reveal that:(1) The field independent and field dependent subjects are inclined to choose different language learning strategies. To be more specific, the field independent students tend to take advantage of cognitive strategy; mean while the field dependent students prefer to adopt the meta-cognitive strategy and social strategy.(2) The science students tend to be the field independent, and the liberal art students are inclined to be the field dependent. There is consistency of language learning strategies distribution between the majors and cognitive styles.(3) The art and science students have significant difference on the employment of language learning strategies. To be more specific, the art students are inclined to take advantage of the meta-cognitive strategy and social strategy; on the other hand, the science students prefer to utilize the cognitive strategy. The art students and the science students have no significant differences on the employment of affective strategy.Students’ cognitive styles have significant influence on their language learning strategies. In the classroom teaching, teachers need to know the characteristics of learning styles and learning strategies, then adjust their teaching strategies to achieve effective English teaching.
