Praised by the literary magazine Granta as one of the20“Best of Young British Writers”,Jeanette Winterson plays an important role in the British literature. Oranges Are Not the OnlyFruit is Jeanette Winterson’s semi-autobiographical novel and it wins the Whitbread Best FirstNovel Award of1985. Winterson gives her own name to the protagonist of this novel. It is thisnovel that establishes the distinctive writing style of the author which not only presentsWinterson’s unique writing technique but also shows her profound feminist Standpoint.This thesis tends to interpret Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit from the perspective ofintertextuality. It is divided into six chapters: Chapter One is the introduction of JeanetteWinterson and her novels, as well as foreign and domestic research on Winterson and herworks. Chapter Two is the theoretical frameworks, which introduces intertextuality from adeep perspective. Chapter Three to Chapter Five is the main interpreting part of this thesis,which analyzes the intertextuality between the novel and the traditional way of life, the Bibleand myth, and to achieve the aim to challenge and subvert traditional values and supremacy ofchristian. Chapter Six is the conclusion for the above analysis and interpretation.Through the interpretation of this novel, this thesis indicates Winterson’s thought ofabandon the traditional doctrine and start the journey of finding true self.
