With the increasingly prominent position of reading in the development of core literacy,the world has set off a wave of “reading literacy research,” and China is no exception.The Ministry of Education of China officially released the document “Core Competencies and Values for Chinese Student’s Development” in September 2016,which indicates that China’s education has entered a new era of core literacy cultivating.Against this background,Wang and Chen(2016)constructed the“Framework for the Development of English Reading Literacy for Chinese Primary and Secondary Students.” This paper focuses on middle school students’ English reading literacy based on this framework.Wang and Chen’s(2016)framework covers a wide range of English reading literacy development goals,including two secondary goals,“reading ability” and“reading quality”,and several third and fourth goals.This paper focuses on “reading comprehension” and “reading experience” under the two secondary goals.To that end,this paper introduces the KWL Plus(Know,Want,Learned,Plus: mapping and summary)reading teaching model proposed by American scholar Carr and Ogle(1987)and applies it to the Grade 9 students of a middle school in Guangzhou.By controlling the content of the teaching,the teaching hours,and the teacher,this study investigates the differences in English reading literacy between the experimental group and the control group for a semester of teaching.The specific research questions are:1.What are the contributions of KWL Plus teaching model to Grade 9 students’English reading comprehension?2.What are the contributions of KWL Plus teaching model to Grade 9 students’English reading experience?Given the above problems,this study adopts a variety of research methods,such as questionnaire,experiment,and draws the following conclusions:1.KWL Plus can improve students’ reading comprehension ability,help students expand their background knowledge and cultivate their questioning ability.Compared with the advanced students,the intermediate and elementary students show more obvious progress.2.KWL Plus can promote students’ self-assessment,achieve positive cognition, and foster self-confidence,thus improve students’ reading experience.What enlightens middle school English teachers is that because of its practical and feasible teaching procedures,KWL Plus is more suitable for the current middle school English reading teaching.Teachers should make proper use of this model to enhance students’ self-efficacy and improve students’ reading comprehension ability and questioning ability.This paper applied the KWL Plus teaching model to improve middle school students’ English reading literacy,promoting middle school English curriculum reform to a deeper level.However,it should point out that due to the actual conditions,there are still some limitations in this study,and the problems need further discussion and analysis.
