The twentieth Century Chinese literature has usually been named urban literature andcountryside literature by regional culture sense. However, between urban literature andcountryside literature, small town literature is an objective existence that can not be ignored.But the academic study of small town literature has been marginalized for a long time. Thispaper selects the small town novels of small town literature as the research object andattempts to study Chinese modern small town novels from three aspects: the small townnovel’s creation cultural background, cultural connotation and cultural value. This paper willtry to demonstrate new ideas and open up a new study field of small town novels.The full paper is divided into three chapters. The introduction part defines the concept of"small town novels", discussing the uniqueness and the necessity of research for small townnovels. At the same time, arranging the research situation of small town novels in recent years,pointing out the research insufficiency and the innovation of this paper.The first chapter is about small town novel’s creation cultural background. This chaptermainly adopts the research method of social history criticism, from the influence of Chinesetraditional culture, western culture, Chinese and Western culture’s conflict and integration toexplain the small town novel’s creation cultural background.After the Opium War, westernculture quickly spread to China, but Chinese traditional culture was not dead, it stilldominated the people in small town by its tremendous influence. The modern writers whoBorn in the small town, on the one hand, they influenced by western modern culture; on theother hand, they did not get rid of the shackles of traditional culture. Facing the two conflictvalue system, their identity seems very awkward. Small town novels were generated in suchcultural background.The second chapter is about the cultural connotation of small town novels. This chaptermainly uses the method of text analysis, finding out the natural scenery, cultural scene and thecharacters from the small town novels as representative, making a deep analysis of small townnovels’ cultural connotation. The natural scenery of the small town embodies rich regionalculture connotation, the humanistic scene bears the connotation of the small town people’ sspiritual culture, the character images highlight the connotation of cultural personality of thesmall town people, the three parts constitute the profound cultural implication small townworld in writers’ novels.The third chapter is about the cultural value of small town novels. This chapter combines the method of text analysis with text criticism. Firstly, it describes the small town’s richregional culture and affirms the unique folk value of small town novels. Secondly, it criticizesthe feudal ethics,the patriarchal beliefs, the character of small town people’s conformism andblind opposition to everything foreign, then expresses anxiety about the invasion of westernculture and the lost of traditional culture, showing the cultural criticism and reflection value.Finally, it makes a detailed analysis to following three aspects: the recollection complex of thewriter to small town, the imagery and the artistic style of small town novels. All of thesereveal the aesthetic and culture value of small town novels.The conclusion part sums up the content of the modern small town novels and evaluatesthe value significance of small town novels, at last makes an expectation to the researchdirection and development prospects of small town novels in the future.
