In the process of globalization, the increasing depth and breadth of the China’s opening up to the outside world have been greatly promoted and the cultural exchange between China and the West has permeated into every aspect of our daily life. As is known to all, boasting thousands of years’history, Chinese cuisine culture has held a highly important position in Chinese culture and enjoys a high reputation abroad for its distinct characteristics. Capturing close attention from foreigners, Chinese cuisine culture acts as an ambassador in the transmission of Chinese culture. Therefore, a well-done bilingual menu is of great importance. However, most of these renderings in the field of C-E menu translation are far from satisfactory and cannot meet the requirement of cuisine culture communication between China and the West for quite a long time. In recent years, many experts and scholars devote themselves in the study of menu translation and put forward some C-E menu translation strategies and methods accordingly. And what’s more, the C-E menu translation has already drawn government’s attention, which begins to attach great importance to it. In preparing for the29th Olympic Games held in2008and Expo2010in Shanghai, the relative governmental department standardized parts of Chinese dish names. Because it is the double obstacles of language and culture between East and the West that the C-E menu translation should stride over, our translators should make great effort to improve our cultural awareness and bilingual ability to do C-E menu translation appropriately. This thesis mainly discusses the feasible solution to the English translation of Chinese menu based on the case study of two authentic translation books, one is English Versions of Chinese Menu, released by Beijing Tourism Bureau prepared for29th Olympic Games in2008; and the other is C-E Menu Translation, a pamphlet published during the Expo2010in Shanghai. The thesis first summarizes some translation features, principles and methods used in these two books, and their feasibility. Then, it analyzes the naming features of Chinese dishes, existing problems and their corresponding causes. At last, facing the whole translation market, it brings forward some practical translation principles and methods.Through the exploration and the discussion made in the thesis the author hopes to offer some help for the future C-E menu translation and contribute to the publication of Chinese food culture.
