Color words, as a significant part of language, exert deeply influence in every fields of human society and are reflected in different communication activities. Because of their frequent use in literature, they raise the interests of scholars in the translation strategies, principles and methods in color words translation studies. From east to west, from ancient times to recently, translation theories have changed through the time, so it is with the strategies of color words translation. In the past three decades, the centre of translation is mainly focused on grasping the wholeness of the text and translators’holistic perception is requested by such a trend. Therefore, the integration of gestalt theory and translation is feasible.When this theory enters China, Jiang Qiuxia published a monograph on the application of gestalt theories to literary translation in2002. Since then, lots of papers have been published on the application of gestalt theories to English learning and teaching and literary translation. Until now, few in the academic field have applied gestalt theories to color words translation. This thesis will make a tentative interdisciplinary study of the relationship between gestalt theory and color words translation in fantasy from English to Chinese. This thesis first gives an introduction to color words study and the resent translation methods and principles that used in translating color words. Secondly, the thesis point out the new point to translate color words in fantasy literature--gestalt theory, gestalt principle and image-G. Thirdly, the study elaborates the relationship between gestalt theory and translation, how the principles of gestalt theory are used to recreate an image-G to get the best version of translation. To be more exact; the source language text is a unified whole embodied or realized by a set of related components integrated together, and the translator’s gestalt perception allows him to grasp the text as a whole. In this way, through the interaction between the translator and the source language text, the source language text can easily comprehended by the translator and the wholeness of the source language text can be reproduced naturally and faithfully in the target language text.
