On Translation Of Detective Novels From The Perspective Of Gestalt Image Theory

Owing to their exciting plot,thrilling mystery and horrific atmosphere,detective novels are very popular in the world.Study on translation of the detective novel is a part of the translation study,and it is an important measure to promote cultural communications between countries.A study to explore translation methods will promote the translation of detective novels.Gestalt theory provides a new angle for translation studies.Jiang Qiuxia,a Chinese scholar,has made an intensive study of gestalt theory and made significant achievements,including the gestalt image theory.Detective novels are featured with wholeness of story and coherence of plots.Application of gestalt image theory in translation helps to keep artistic values and linguistic frame of original novels.This thesis introduces the main concepts and definitions of gestalt theory at first,as well as its developments.All analyses taking gestalt image theory as theoretical framework.Current conditions of gestalt theory and translation are introduced too.Taking And Then There Were None,one of Agatha Christie’s masterpieces,as material of the case study,this thesis holds that reconstruction of gestalt images need to be fulfilled both at the aesthetic and linguistic levels.Therefore,this thesis summarizes some classical elements of the detective novels as aesthetic images.Then,how to reconstruct these aesthetic images in translation is discussed in detail.When it comes to linguistic level,four gestalt principles are used to analyze Qi’s translation.This thesis finds that four gestalt principles,namely the principle of wholeness,proximity,closure,simplicity are instructive in reconstructing gestalt images.At the same time,translation methods are provided to put principles into translation practice.A lot of examples have been analyzed to explore the translation effects of these translation methods in guidance of gestalt principles.Then,translated text will achieve language coherence in guidance of gestalt principles.And the gestalt images can be imagined by target readers from linguistic frame.Finally,the translator can represent the whole gestalt image to target readers successfully.
