Image-G Actualization In Drama Translation

Most of previous research concerning drama translation focuses more on local translation strategies than holistic aesthetic feelings and more on translation results than translation process,which runs counter to either aesthetic experience a drama intends to bring or the mainstream of modern translation study.Therefore,this thesis aims at doing a comparative research on the image-G actualization in Cha Guan(????)by Lao She and its two translations separately by Ying Ruocheng and Howard Gibbon in an aesthetic sense.Besides,the psychological mechanism and active operations are to be restored as far as possible.This thesis takes the actualization of micro and macro image-Gs in Teahouse as the framework,and proposes the image-G actualized by theme as the third macro image-G.Following questions are to be answered:1)How are image-G qualities used to help perceive gestalt features in the process of reading?2)How do gestalt laws help a reader perceive an image-G in Cha Guan(????)?3)How are image-Gs actualized and presented differently in two translations?4)How does the harmonious effect presented in one version differ from the other?Findings are as follows:1)Individual quality,derived from the writing style,rhyme and so on,works to make micro image-Gs by idioms or figures of speech gestalt,and a harmonious effect in linguistic sense can rise out of it.On the other hand,gestalt quality,meaning the mood,tone or atmosphere involved in an image,derives from the personality in macro sense and in turn can make the words and phrases in micro one gestalt.2)The law of integrity works for a reader to grasp the integral style of original language and can help define polysemy and erase ambiguity.The law of heterogeneous isomorphism works in perceiving image-Gs actualized by theme.3)Based on the purpose of performing,explicitation and explication are adopted in both Ying's and Howard's versions to have the text understood.But compared with Ying's version in which operations such as flexible assimilation and creation are adopted to realize a more harmonious effect,Howard transplanted the original image-G in more cases to achieve effective cultural communication.Theoretically,how image-G in a drama differentiates from other literary texts is put forward on one hand and a new branch under micro image-G is thereby taken as an angle.On the other hand,the law of simplicity is testified to apply to performability of drama.Realistically,it provides an aesthetic perspective for both drama translation research and practice.
