The Relationship Of Perfectionism, Self-concept And Depression In University Freshmen

Objective:To understand the situation of the university freshman’s Perfectionism, Self-concept and Depression; To explore the relationship of the three.Method:Frost’s Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Tennessee Self-concept Scale and The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale were assessed in575students. Statistical methods adopted included t-test, The Pearson correlation, Multiple linear regression, etc.Results:(1) Scores compared with the norm of College Students, Organization(OR) of Perfectionism was significantly increased and concern over mistakes(CM), doubts about actions(DA), parental expectations(PE) was significantly decreased; There was no significant sex difference in Perfectionism; Non-only child had significantly higher scores than only child in personal standards (PS).(2) Average level of self-concept in all dimensions is high; Male had significantly higher scores than Female students in physical self (PH) and self-criticism(SC); Only child had significantly higher scores than non-only child in PH, social self (SO), identity (ID), self-satisfaction (SA) and TOT.(3) Scores compared with the norm of College Students, was significantly decreased; There was no significant sex difference in depression.(4) There was significantly positive correlation between QR and all positive dimensions of self-concept, other dimensions of Perfectionism and SC. There was significantly negative correlation between CM and all positive dimensions of Self-concept, DA and all positive dimensions of Self-concept, OR and SC, PS and personal self(PER), PE and moral-ethical self (ME)、behavior (B)、family self (FA)、PER; QR、CM、DA、PS could significantly predict Self-concept.(5) Depression was significantly positive correlation with CM、DA PS、PE and TOT, And significantly negative correlation with QR; QR、 CM、DA、PS could significantly predict Depression.(6) Depression was significantly positive correlation with SC, And significantly negative correlation with other dimensions; PER、SC、ME and TOT could Significantly predict Depression.(7) Significant mediating effects of self-concept on relation of Perfectionism and Depression.(8) Significant regulation effect of self-concept on relation of Perfectionism and Depression.Conclusions:(1) In this study of university freshmen, level of perfectionism is low, the self-concept is positive, the degree of depression is low.(2) There are close relationship among college students’ Depression, Self-concept and Depression. The higher level of Perfectionism, the more negative Self-concept and the higher the level of Depression.(3) Self-concept partially mediated the relationship between Perfectionism and Depression; Self-concept could regulate the relationship between Perfectionism and Depression.
