English has become an international language in the international communication andplays a more and more important role in many aspects of social life. At the same time,English education has become a global hot topic. In the field of English teaching, there isone view that he NESTs are superior to the NNESTs in English education and the NNESTsare the ideal teachers to teach English. The view has been existed in the field of Englisheducation for a long time. Due to the existence of the view, the NNESTs are unfairlytreated in some areas, such as the employment, the wage level and so on. In2005, Holidayputs forward the native-speakerism in his book whose name is The Struggle to TeachEnglish as an International Language. In the book, he defines this kind of view asnative-speakerism. Who is a better English teacher? The scholars in the field of Englisheducation have conducted the discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of thetwo kinds of English teachers.Since the definition of concept of native-speakerism, during the nearly ten years, thescholars in the foreign countries have carefully done a lot of researches about thecomparison between the two kinds of English teachers, most of the researchers use thenon-native English teachers as the subjects, so the results may inevitable contain thesubjective bias to the non-native English speaker teacher. And also, there are somescholars who use the students as the subjects to do the research, while the researches arestill in the primary stage. Besides, the researches about this topic is mainly in the foreigncountries, the research is relatively less in China mainland and the field of the comparisonof the two kinds of English teachers is a blank space.Based on the research situation, using the critical theory and cultural hegemony asthe theory lens, the research collects the data through the questionnaire and interview. Theresearch chooses randomly120non-English major undergraduates from one University inthe north part of China as the subjective. And the aim of the research is to find thestudents’ perceptions towards the two kinds of English teachers. The research is composedof the students’ general perceptions and their attitudes to the differences of the two kindsof English teachers. The result indicates that the students believe that the two kinds of English teachershave their own strengths in different areas. For example, the native English speakerteacher is good at teaching the pronunciation and culture of the English-speaking countries, while the non-native English speaker teacher has the advantage in grammar and writing, the two kinds of teacher are equally the same, and no one is superior to the other. Based onthe result got from the research, the paper gives the proposal that combination of the twokinds of English teacher would be helpful in the perfect of teaching activities and theimprovement of the teaching qualities when the two kinds of English teachers play theirstrengths in different English teaching fields.
