On The Subtitling Translation Of Rhetorical Devices In TV Series

With the rapid development of the internationalization, the subtitling translation of TV series plays a more and more important role in our daily life. People also call TV series translation as screen translation or audiovisual translation. Compared with the West academic world, the domestic academic study in this field is new and immature. Many relative essays have been published, studying from various aspects, and many institutes relating the study of TV series translation have been set up abroad. But on the other hand, the relative study in China just begins and it still has a long way to go.Frankly speaking, there are two main categories existing in the TV series translation field, which are dubbing and subtitling. In Chinese, they mean “配音”and “字幕”. In this paper, the author centers on subtitling part, for in some degree dubbing needs more attraction of dubbers’authentic sounds to draw audience’s attention which doesn’t seem so objective.Today there is no definitely mature, theoretic study on the subtitling translation of TV series, and many aspects of the field are worth furthering. Therefore translators in TV series translation field still have a long way to go.In the thesis, the author tries to find out the best method for the subtitling translation of rhetorical devices in English TV series from a systematic and academic perspective. Subtitling translation is a totally different style from the ordinary text translation. It has its own difficulties when translating especially for those subtitling which is applied in rhetorical devices. The writer tries to apply the famous relative translation methods to the practice of the TV series subtitling translation. In the paper, it presents a great number of materials from the original English TV series, such as Friends, Grown in Pain and so on.The paper includes five chapters. The first chapter is about the instruction of the paper:the background, purpose, significance, and structure of the research. The second chapter shows the research situation from the abroad and domestic aspects. Chapter three introduces the basic theories of the paper. It includes New Mark’s translation theory and its corresponding methods---semantic and communicative translation, and secondly, the Skopos theory and its corresponding method---adequate adaption. They construct the theoretic framework for the thesis. In the following chapter, the author applies the theory which is mentioned in Chapter3to the subtitling translation of metaphor, allusion, and pun in English TV series. The reason of choosing the three rhetoric devices is that the first two have the highest frequency of usage and the latter one is the one which concerns the hottest discussion. And from the above—mentioned, draw a conclusion about which method is the most suitable one for the subtitling translation. The last chapter gives a brief introduction about the major finding, limitation and further study on subtitling translation of rhetorical devices in the TV series.
