China is a civilized ancient country. It has a long history of jewelry design. Since its modern design started relatively late, jewelry design is still in its starting stage now. China’s designs mainly learn from overseas designs. Though China’s design has large amounts of cultural elements, it has not formed its own styles yet. While Japanese designs are very outstanding recently in the global stage, which is mainly thanks to their proper use of cultural elements in their jewelry design. They try to show the work’s essence in a traditional oriental perspective and power. They pursue unique design style and a good combination of practicality, functionality and decoration. This is what China need to learn and improve the most. Chinese culture and Japanese culture are both oriental cultures. Due to some historical reasons, Chinese culture and Japanese culture have numerous common grounds and similarities. Therefore, in choosing the design elements, the writer chooses the Japanese elements which is not unique to Japan, but shared by China’s tradition as well. As the two have similar background, it is conducive to the research of combining traditional Chinese elements in the design.This paper sets the example of pearl design. Guided by some new ideas, this paper adopts the research methods such as literature review, surveys, interviews, comparative research, case study and so on. This paper provides a comprehensive survey and comparison of pearl jewelry and Japanese cultural elements. By conducting research on the combination of form and function, design ideas, design principles, design techniques, this paper tries to combine Japanese cultural elements in pearl jewelry design and explore how to turn the cultural elements into the unique characteristics of the design work. Lastly, this paper provides two series of jewelry sets and some backup proposals. Altogether,16sets are designed. There are altogether more than60effective pictures,1set of background stories,13photography woks,1set of product postcards and a brochure.Moreover, this paper conducts research on the form, idea and principles of pearl design in a multi-faceted and multi-dimensional way. By using the innovative way to introduce story background to pearl products, this research gives light to the importance of cultural elements in product design. Based on these cultural elements, the research tries to come up with the coherence point of Jaspanese cultural elements and modern jewelry design to design jewelry with cultural characteristics and consumer acceptability. All these may provide more possibility and reference values to the future of China’s jewelry design.
