The Study Of Euphemism In TV Talk Show From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon as well as an important means employed by communicators in order to achieve the ideal effect of communication. Up to now, many scholars at home and abroad have studied it from different perspectives and made remarkable achievements. However, few studies are concentrated on euphemisms from the perspective of Adaptation Theory in a specific context, such as in TV talk show.TV talk show is intended for the public, so the communicators should pay more attention to the language use in this specific context. If the conversation involves sensitive topics, communicators always adopt the indirect euphemism as their language strategy to achieve successful communication. In addition, since euphemism is the language choice made by language users who aim to adapt to a specific context, this thesis attempts to study the use of euphemism in a famous TV talk show-Oprah Winfrey Show on the basis of Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory.This thesis aims to probe into how euphemisms are used to make the ideal effect of communication under the framework of Adaptation Theory, and broaden the research field. It is also hoped that this research can deepen the understanding of euphemism.
