Multiple Interpretations Of Keyboard Improvisation:Comparisons And Analyses

Keyboard improvisation has played an important role throughout the western and the Chinese history of music. Yet, it is far later that attention has been paid to improvisation in Chinese academic circle so that it remains unnoticed by most musical professionals and amateurs. Worse is that little value has been attached to improvisation in music education in China. With the boom of musical culture, the unique charm of improvisation and its special function in music education have become more and more attractive. However, multitudinous problems concerning improvisation are needed to be elaborately studied. Presently, some significant issues concerned remain controversial, such as the relationship between improvisation and relevant majors and the criteria for evaluating improvisation, etc., which are detrimental for those professionals to the comprehensive understanding and mastery of improvisation, to its application and development in music education in China and to music lovers’ appreciation of improvisation. The settlement of the controversy can help both professionals and amateurs to know improvisation better and to improve their ability to appreciate it, which will in turn encourage more people to devote themselves to the performance and study of improvisation. This also enables a large number of faculties to understand and see the value of improvisation in music education, especially in the piano education. Meanwhile, it enables students to expose themselves to more approaches to study music so that music education in China is expected to improve.
