Ci Diao (the pattern of a Ci Poetry), formerly referred to the styles of words and lyrics in a Ci Poetry, is an important component for Ci. It has been narrowly defined as merely the rules of characters and the arrangement of tones in a Ci Poetry nowadays, because of the demise of its musicality and the highlight of literariness in poetry study. During the development of Ci, more complicated patterns are derived, including the Derivation of Diao Ming (Ci Poetries with same tone, but different names) and the Derivation of Ci Ti (Ci Poetries with same tone but different forms; and Ci Poetries with different tones and different forms). This paper consists of three sections——introduction, body, and conclusion. The current research results of Ci Diao, the research scope, purposes and methods of this paper and the symbols applied to show different Ci Diao will be demonstrated briefly in the introduction. Four chapters will be found in the body:Chapter1explains some relevant concepts about the derivation phenomenon of Ci Diao, which sets the theoretical framework and discussion basis for the whole paper. Terminologies such as Zheng Ti (Standard Metric), Bie Ti (Changed Metrics), Yuan Ti (Original Metric), Bian Ti (Variant Metrics) and Bian Ge (Declension) are defined first. Then the reasons why Ci Diao is derived into different groups, the ways in which it has been derived and the detailed classifications of different Ci Diao are discussed with analyses of examples. The Derivation of Ci Diao is caused by both the internal effects (influenced by the authors’ style) and the external effects (influenced by the spreading process). The Derivation of Ci Diao is achieved by the variation of syntactic and rhyme rules, including the changes in the sentence, the structure patterns and rhyme. As for the types of different Ci Diao, it includes Ci Poetries with same tone but different forms, and Ci Poetries with different tones and different forms. In Chapter2, one of the types of Ci Diao-Ci Poetries with same tone but different forms are explored. Based on the numbers of patterns can be gone with one tones, the author classifies this type of Ci Diao into four groups which are "Ci Diao with only one pattern","Ci Diao with less numbers of patterns (2to5)","Ci Diao with medium numbers of patterns (6to15)" and "Ci Diao with more numbers of patterns (>16)". Through the analyses on the development of a same tone with different forms, it shows that for the same tone, the different patterns which can be matched with it, have an internal relationship of derivation. Moreover, the group of one tone with many patterns was common in Song Dynasty. In Chapter3, another types of Ci Diao-Ci Poetries with different tones and different forms are discussed. According to the obviousness of tones and forms, the author divided this type of Ci Diao into the explicit derivations and the implicit derivations which are discussed later with detailed examples. Through exploring the derivative relations on different tones with different forms, it proves that there is an internal derivative relationship among these different classifications of Ci Diao.Chapter4discusses an exceptional phenomenon of the Ci Poetries with different tones and different forms which is derived from poems. This derivation has been discussed on the bases of modern poems and ancient poems. In this circumstance, some groups of Ci Ti are proved to come from poems, and some rhymes of Ci are also proved to be evolved from the rhymes of poems. In the last section, all concepts applied in the whole paper are concluded and summarised.
