A Research On The Translation Of Taboo Humorous Discourse From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Humor is an indispensible literary quality, and it is also a direct reflection of the talk show author’s style, talent and wisdom. What is more, taboo humor is an important source of charm of talk show works to the audience. Therefore, the translation of taboo humorous discourse should not be underestimated in the process of talk show translation. Instead, effectively translation of taboo humorous discourse should be given primary importance among priorities in a successful talk show translation.In accordance with the linguistics school’s translation-unit-level system, this study reviews and summarizes the language character of taboo humorous discourse from different angles of phoneme, vocabulary as well as rhetoric. It comes to a conclusion that taboo humorous discourse always tends to use unconventional means of language, which shows that Relevance Theory on one hand is applicable to the translation of taboo humorous discourse, and on the other hand provides verbal clues for its translation. In this study, Relevance Theory is applied to the translation of taboo humorous discourse, and three important criteria are illustrated. According to the language character of taboo humorous discourse, this study discusses the application of Relevance Theory in humorous discourse translation by searching for pronunciation clues, vocabulary clues and rhetorical clues.The guiding role of Relevance Theory in the translation of taboo humorous discourse is undeniable. Therefore, strengthening the translator’s reasoning consciousness and knowledge of contextual assumption and Relevance Theory will contribute to a better translation of taboo humorous discourse.
