As a special literary form, Ci poems in Song Dynasty occupy an important position in Chinese literary history and record the most brilliant text in classical Chinese literary history in accompany with poetry in Tang Dynasty. As the representative of Wanyue school, Li Qingzhao is not only the most outstanding poetess in Ci poems’ creation field, but also one of the most outstanding poetess in the history of poetess. Meanwhile, the translation study on Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems also has attracted the attention and devotion of many scholars both home and abroad, and they have made much contribution to the cultural communication between China and foreign countries. Artistic conception is a kind of artistic state resulted from the combination of daily situation (or natural scenery) and the strong feelings of the poets. Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems give the readers endless imagination space especially by beautiful artistic conception with strong feelings, clear and vivid images, and lingering charm. Therefore, to some extent, whether a translation for Li Qingzhao’s Ci poem is good or not is decided by whether the artistic conception is successfully transferred into target language.Translation aesthetics is the combination of translation and aesthetics and occupies an important position in the field of translation theories. In recent years, more and more scholars devoted themselves into the career of developing translation aesthetic theories and applying them into translating practice. This thesis is also an attempt of the translation aesthetic theory application, aiming to make some contribution to the development of translation aesthetics theory. The research objective of this paper is to achieve the translation strategies and methods that can transfer the artistic conception beauty in Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems through applying translation aesthetic theories into comparative analysis of English versions of Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems. Then the strategies achieved in this paper can also instruct the practice of translation Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems and even other classical Chinese poetry. On the basis of concluding and explaining translation aesthetic theory, the thesis classifies the artistic conception beauty of Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems into three major kinds:blend of feelings and scenery, coexistence of fiction and reality, and lingering charm. Then the author chooses representative Ci poems by Li Qingzhao of each kind from ample Ci poems of Li Qingzhao and their different English versions by translators at home and abroad respectively as examples to analyze the artistic conception beauty transfer comparatively in accordance with the translation aesthetic theory, especially the five basic requirements for aesthetic reproduction by Liu Miqing. The analysis also verifies that the requirements by Liu Miqing can be regarded as one of the evaluation criteria for the artistic conception transfer in Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems Translation. On the basis of comparative analysis, the author concluded several suggestions for the artistic conception transfer in translation of Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems. The suggestions include being faithful to source language text (semantic content, stylistic format, style, and so on), leaving aesthetic imaging space for target readers, giving full play to the translator’s aesthetic creativity, and so on. And these suggestions may make certain contribution to the further study on artistic conception beauty transfer in Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems translation and even the classical Chinese poetry translation. Presently, the paper or monograph on the Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems translation from the perspective of translation aesthetics is not common, and the only papers of this type mainly study translation of Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems generally and not focus on the transfer of artistic conception beauty specifically. Hence, a major creative point of this thesis lies in applying the translation aesthetic theories into the transfer of artistic conception beauty in Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems translation and then concluding several suggestions for the transfer on the basis of comparative analysis.This thesis includes five chapters. The first chapter introduces research background, objectives, significance and the structure of this thesis briefly. The second chapter is literature review, introducing relevant research in relevant fields. The third chapter is the part of theoretical framework, introducing translation aesthetics and artistic conception. The fourth chapter is the major part, analyzing different versions of Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems in accordance to the theory of translation aesthetics and then concluding suggestions for the transfer of Li Qingzhao’s Ci poems. The last part is the conclusion, concluding the major findings of this thesis, its practical significance, implications and limitation of this study, and suggestions for further relative study.
