This report is based on the author’s translation practice of The Christmas Wreck,a short story by Frank R. Stockton, an American writer and humorist. Its translation isfinished under the guidance of her supervisor. In this report Peter Newmark’s theoryof semantic translation and communicative translation (ST and CT Theory) isintroduced to analyze the translation. This theory points out the way for literarytranslation at the macro level, providing a theoretical basis for translators to adoptdifferent strategies accordingly. This report falls into five chapters. Chapter one is task description, including thebackground of the translation practice and requirements of literary translation.Chapter two deals with process description, consisting of pre-translation preparation, translation process, and difficulties in the translation. Chapter three introduces theguiding theory. Chapter four, the main body of the report, is case analysis. In this part, the translator mainly analyzes some typical cases at lexical, syntactic, and stylisticlevel to illustrate how she finally accomplishes her translation task under the guidanceof ST and CT Theory. Chapter five is conclusion in which the author summarizes hergains and losses from this translation practice.
