Under the background of the economic globalization, interpreting is playing an important role in the field of international politics, economy and culture. However, there are not so many researches on how to master the interpreting strategies and improve interpreting performance in China. Therefore, the author hopes to gain interpreting methods and make more people know the importance and strictness of diplomatic interpreting through studying interpreting strategies so as to provide theoretical basis and practice guidance for people. The present study analyzes the interpreting data of foreign minister Wang Yi’s press conference by applying the theory of Nida’s functional equivalence theory. The essence of the interpreting data are selected, the characters and difficulties of diplomatic interpreting are disclosed and the interpreting strategies are summerized by using the method of analysis and synthesis. From the perspective of functional equivalence theory, the paper combines the particularity of diplomatic interpreting with interpreting theory to discuss diplomatic interpreting strategies during the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. It firstly explains the functional equivalence theory in details. As the core theory of Nida, functional equivalence theory emphasizes that the target language should be equivalent to the source language in meaning and literary form so that the listeners can have the similar response. During the progress of diplomatic interpreting, interpreters should obey the four basic requirements of interpretation in order to achieve the real functional equivalence. Secondly, it explains the differences of cultural background through analyzing the specific examples so as to introduce the political characteristics of diplomatic interpreting. The language of diplomatic interpreting should be precise and efficient to reach the win-win result. Finally, it explains the interpreting strategies from the equivalence of words and sentences, and analyzes examples of the two sessions press conferences. Word equivalence mainly focuses on acronym, phrase and words with Chinese characters. Sentence equivalence places emphasis on subject, compound sentence and structure transform. Transforming sentence structure and adjusting word order are inevitable. Therefore, interpreters can reduce cultural differences and achieve desired political results by reasonably using the functional equivalence theory.
