On Interpretation Of Diplomatic Euphemism From The Perspective Of The Functional Equivalence Theory

Euphemism reflects the historical, the political, the economical, the cultural andthe ideological situations of a nation from a special aspect. It can help us maintain aharmonious relationship in our daily life. As one kind of it, diplomatic euphemism isthe expression used by diplomats concerning some opinions that are improper to saydirectly. Due to the differences of history, culture and social value between Chinaand other countries, the interpreting of diplomatic euphemism is quite complex.While interpreting, we need to keep the target listeners in mind so as to insure thecommunication is effective.The thesis tries to discuss the interpreting of it by applying functionalequivalence theory. The corpus are mainly selected from the transcripts of theMinistry of Foreign Affair’s spokesperson at press conferences from January,2014to December,2014. It also analyzes the interpreting of diplomatic euphemism withtypical examples in some diplomatic occasions.Functional equivalence theory proves to be quite effective and instructive ineuphemism interpreting. However, in the practice of euphemism interpretation,limitations inevitable. Further exploration and enrichment are needed to provideguidance for interpretation.
