Deception is one of the pragmatic strategies which are frequently used by people in daily life. It can be said that Deception is the most effective lubrication to alleviate pragmatic conflicts. This paper aims to choose a typical role of A Dream of Red Mansions---Wang Xifeng’s Deception as the studying object, and the Adaptation Theory as the guiding theory, in the way of working on the analysis of the form of expression and the analysis of the dynamic nature of the adaptation process to conduct a detailed and abundant research on this strategy.First of all we redefined Deception based on the results of previous studies, then selected Wang Xifeng’s Deception from A Dream of Red Mansions, laying the foundation for the further research.Second we analyzed the forms of Deception and made statistical analysis of them. Then we applied the Adaptation Theory to process Wang Xifeng’s Decep tion from four angles including Contextual Correlates of Adaptability, Structural Objects of Adaptability, Dynamics of Adaptability and Salience of the Adaptability to summarize the characteristics of Wang Xifeng’s Deception. Finally we put emphasis on the analysis of the Adaptation Effect of Wang Xifeng’s Deception, expecting to give some guides for the use of Wang Xifeng’s Deception in daily life.
