Yan Lianke has been paying sheer attention to rural areas and the reality of China. Yan’s realism-branded novels are drawn heavily on folks and are characteristic of Shenshizhuyi coined by Yan in his book titled My Reality and My Isms and interpreted as rising above realism and focusing on the hidden truth. The paper explores the change of the content, spirits and ways of his novels. The part of Introduction introduces generalities and backgrounds of his writing and then gives a general description of four series of his writing and the stance of rural-area novels. The first chapter begins with going back to rural areas, analyses what four series that attach great significance to the existence of the folk relate and sheds light on the timeline of four series. The second chapter expounds on the core of his novels----miserable existence that runs through these discussions. The change of miserable-existence brand means the change of Yan’s stand on the writing and disposes the author himself into the theme of realism. The third chapter gives a further exposition of the change of writing’s style and enlarges on its interaction with folk cultural resources by means of analyzing four novels in chronological order. It arrives at the conclusion that there is a causal relation between folk resources and realism in his novels, which endows two factors with a new meaning and esthetical characteristics. Based on above-mentioned discussion, realism carries a new direction in its innovation terms and therefore can labeled as being pioneering; folk resources show an alternative reality against the backdrop of new-type realism.
