The paper is divided into four parts. Through the analysis and study of the miserable characters in Charles Dickens’s novels, the orientation and the special characteristics of Dickens’s novel composition, and the interactive relationship between this individualized spirit and social history as well as time spirit are revealed. The first chapter aims to analyze the living conditions of the miserable characters in Dickens’s novels, and this living hardship of the miserable characters is manifested by the dilemmas both in physical and psychological conditions. The second chapter is to analyze and summarize the types of the miserable characters in his novels. Based on the common and regular characteristics of Charles Dickens’s novels, the miserable characters are summarized as the protectors of soul, miserable introspecting ones, and the struggling characters in dilemmas, from which Dickens’understanding and perspectives for the miserable characters are seen. The third chapter explains the root of the misery and the social and historical problems reflected from it. In reference to the historical and time context of social development, the reasons for people’s living dilemma are revealed through the explanation of the historical factors of the unreasonable social order, the loss of the discourse power, the alienation of the society and humanity, and the doubt and crisis for the religious belief. The fourth chapter explains how the sense of misery cherished by Charles Dickens is formed, analyzes the influences exerted on his writing by his unique growing experience and rich life hardships, and reveals how the religious thought dissolves at last his sense of misery in his works.
