The Research Of Dong Brocade Art In Hunan Province

Dong women are skilled in tillage and spinning. They have unique aesthetic philosophy and excellent weaving skills. Moreover, they create a kind of brocade, Dong brocade. It retains a strong geographic, ethnic characteristics and is closely interrelated to Dong people’s daily life. Despite its seemingly plain surface, Dong brocade’s connotation turns out to be quite wonderful, just like the character enchantment of Dong people. Avoiding being enslaved by material and unity of man and nature are gist of Dong culture. This gist is shown in Dong brocade as well. Dong people in Hunan province play an important role in Dong minority and keep with the skills of weaving brocade across the generations. Hunan Dong brocade has became a living fossil of women weaving culture and precious treasure of Chinese traditional folk arts.The decorative patterns and processing technology of Hunan Dong brocade are researched focuses in this paper. We value the historical origin, formative art, color style and process route of Dong brocade after our field inspections in western area of Hunan province. First, the historical origin, distribution area and classification of Hunan Dong brocade are summarized. Second, the artistic charm of Hunan Dong brocade is analyzed in a cultural and visual angle. The focus of this section are the details, color style and composition of brocade’s decorative patterns. Next, the weaving steps and tools are described systematically. This part is the theoretical basis of Dong brocade’s protection and development. In the end, the value and significance of Dong brocade in the aspect of economy, culture, history and arts is dissected. In addition, we discuss the application and innovation of Hunan Dong brocade under the new condition of culture industry. We try to find a practical and effective way to protect Dong brocade from deracinating. As an excellent local traditional handicraft, Dong brocade accumulates profound culture details, carries culture feature and information of different nations. In the long term, Dong brocade can provide nutrition for modern art and more and more people will realize its beauty around the word.
