A Study Of The Chinese-english Translation Of Report On The Work Of The Government2013in Light Of Functionalist Skopos Theory Of Translation

As the highly authoritative governmental document, Report on the Work ofthe Government makes a review of performance of the government in the pastyear and puts forward work plan for the current year, covering China’s politics,society, economy, culture, people’s livelihood and so on. Thus, it serves as anauthoritative channel to know China’s development status, national polices andstandpoint. Therefore, it is quite necessary and significant to study the Chinese-English translation of Report on the Work of the Government.This thesis comprehensively approaches the study of C-E translation ofReport on the Work of the Government from the perspective of FunctionalistSkopos theory of translation. First of all, the thesis makes a review of previousstudies on Functionalist Skopos theory abroad and in China. Then the theoreticalframework of this thesis is sketched by introducing four representative theoristsand their thoeries. Based on this, this thesis adopts translation oriented textanalysis model to analyze Report on the Work of the Government2013. Afterintroducing the translation principles of publicity-oriented materials, this thesissummarizes translation principles of Report on the Work of the Government2013:skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. At last, this thesis puts forwardappropriate strategies and techniques with examples to tackle translation problemsat lexical level, syntactical level and textual level. This thesis finally proves thatFunctionalist Skopos theory of translation is applicable for C-E translation ofReport on the Work of the Government and other political essays. This theory canbetter assist the translator to choose effective translation methods and techniquesand realize the communicative purpose of the target text.
