With the rapid development of science and technology and the increasingly frequent exchanges with foreign countries, the role of English for Science and Technology(EST)has become more and more prominent in China. As a branch of the EST,electrical English, with the continuous development of China's power industry, has attracted wide attention of translation scholars.Furthermore, the unique features of electrical English also put forward high requirements towards translators.Skopos theory of translation emphasizes the purposes of translation activities and is frequently applied in non-literary translation studies.According to this theory, the adopted translation strategies shall serve to the realization of translation purposes. This translation report applies Skopos theory to approach the English-Chinese translation of the first chapter of Re-powering Markets, which is an official publication of the International Energy Agency. The translator has,in accordance with Skopos theory, comprehensively analyzed this translation practice and provided a target reader-oriented translated text on the basis of preserving the source language messages to the utmost extent,in order to better serve the target readers. This report is composed of five chapters. The first chapter provides an introduction of the material and the significance of this translation project;a description of the translation process is also covered in this chapter. The second chapter makes a research review of the Skopos theory abroad and in China, and introduces the three principles of this theory, namely skopos principle, coherence principle and fidelity principle. The third chapter provides an analysis of text type of source text from the view of extratextual and intratextual factors.Guided by the three principles and based on detailed case analysis, the fourth chapter discusses the adoption of translation strategies and the solution of difficulties encountered in the translation process.A conclusion towards the whole translation project is presented in the final chapter.
