Translation is a major course for China’s higher education as well as one of the main contents of English teaching, In2007, MTI degree was set up. With the development of science and technology, high-level translation talents are in urgent need. So translation research has been done. Scholars start their researches from different aspects and great achievements have been made.Under this background, this paper attempts to make a contribution to translation competence and translation teaching. Firstly, the author summarized the translation competence studies at home and abroad. Some common points in various translation competence models were found, such as multi-components, bilingual transferences, translation strategies etc. Most of all the researches about translation competence models were theoretical rather than empirical, which showed a kind of expert system, rather than student-centered or teaching-practice-oriented. Secondly, according to the pretest and translation practice test used in the research, the author did tests for50seniors of English translation major in a university, discussing their translation competence, developing a questionnaire with reference to test results. Many problems in students’ translation works have been discovered, for example, inaccurate expression, literal translation, poor context awareness etc. According to the analyses and results of the questionnaire, some reasons of poor translation competence have been found out, such as not firmly grasping some translation theories and strategies, lacking professional practices, and existing some loopholes about translation teaching etc.Based on the empirical research, the author has put forward a translation competence model for a particular object and the specific background, providing some suggestions on translation teaching to improve students’ translation competence. Finally, the author pointed out the limitations and further study of the present research.
