In this paper,1940s music clubs and their performances in Tianjin are studied,through the analysis of Tianjin’s archives, such as Ta Kung newspaper, Yi Shinewspaper,Yong newspaper,Guangbo daily newspaper and other related historicalmaterials, in order to understand the development of Tianjin ’s music in1940s, fromthe side of community activities.There are three chapters in the article: Chapter I introduces traditional musicsocieties and their performances in Tianjin, including the formation and performancesof opera, folk and traditional instrumental music community in the1940s; Chapter IIintroduces Western music societies of Tianjin and their performances in the1940s,including the foundation and performances of Western-style orchestra and choralgroups; Chapter III introduces the1940s Tianjin music societies and their educationalperformances, including community groups in order to enrich the educational faculty,improve public education in the music. It also includes the educational situation ofcommunity groups which focus on professional music education.Finally, the article summarizes the characteristics of music communities inTianjing from1940to1949. It includes the diversity, the rigorous organization, theoutstanding fundamental functions of societies and communication between Chineseand Western music.
