On The Limitations Of "Youdao Online Translation System"

In recent years, Statistic-Based Machine Translation systems have been put into use, NetEase’s newly developed "Youdao Translation" is a popular one among all these systems. It is the intention of this dissertation to examine the basic functions of Youdao online translation system and to find out its limitations by analyzing the E-C translation of1001Escapes to Experience Before You Die from three aspects, namely, words, phrases and sentences based on the Machine Translation theory put forward by Doug Arnold. And the ways to improve Machine Translation are identified.In this dissertation, the text of1001Escapes to Experience Before is used to set up a mini corpus so as to extract words, phrases and sentences from the corpus so that text analysis can be carried out to introduce the basic functions of Youdao online translation system and to find out its limitations. It is found that this system proves the four limitations proposed by Doug Arnold and problems can be solved to some extent by building comprehensive corpus and corpus in various professional fields. This dissertation has five chapters. Chapter1introduces the purpose, significance and research method of this dissertation. Chapter2reviews the development of Machine Translation, and then explains the definition, operation principles, category and characteristic of the online Statistic-Based Machine Translation, and gives a brief introduction of Doug Arnold’s MT theory, computational linguistics and corpus-based text analysis method. Chapter3describes the content, text type and characteristics of the book which named1001Escapes to Experience Before You Die. In Chapter4, based on Doug Arnold’s theory, limitations of the Youdao online translation system are analyzed in three aspects, namely, words, phrases and sentences. The causes of limitations are found out and ways of improvement are to be proposed. Chapter5concludes the dissertation.
