A Report On The Translation Of An Excerpt From Machine Translation

The material of this translation practice report is selected from the ninth chapter and part of the tenth chapter of Machine Translation.The book aims at providing an overview of the progress in machine translation since 1950 s.The selected part is mainly about statistical machine translation and word alignment,the “fundamental equation” of machine translation,the IBM models,segment-based machine translation,alignment models accounting for syntax and double alignment.The report can be divided into four parts: Task Description,Process Description,Case Analysis,Summary and Reflection.On the whole,the translation material is a typical popular science with clear logic and formal language,which make it a favorable translation material.The main method of it is literal translation,and various translation strategies such as speech conversion,supplementation,omission,substitution of sentences and word-order changing are also taken frequently.The difficulties encountered in translation are divided into three levels: vocabulary,sentence and discourse,and were solved by case analysis,group discussion and consulting.After revision and polishing,the translation finally came into being.This report is a review and summary of the whole translation project.Through this translation practice,the author have improved translation skills,summarized the general skills of similar translation texts,acquired the cutting-edge knowledge in the field of machine translation and learned how to solve the difficulties during translation process.Machine translation is one of the major projects in Natural Language Processing,and it changes rapidly with the development of deep learning.It is hoped that this report can contribute to the popularization of machine translation and provide reference for other translators.
