Imperial portraiture is a kind of painting that in relation to various values, such ashistory, culture, art, etc. Different culture backgrounds cause the art style diversity. Thispaper begins with a brief overview of the art of Chinese and western portraiture, combingthe concept, development and clarification of portraiture. Then a comparative analysis isdeveloped from the origin and development, aesthetic ideas, patterns and characteristics ofmanifestation of the Chinese and western imperial portraiture to explore the artisticfeatures of Western imperial portraiture and to research the forming reasons the differentforms of imperial portraiture and emphasizes the times value of different imperialportraiture style features. This paper attempts to identify the different root reasons of theformation of different characteristics of East and West, in order to evaluate the attitude ofeastern and Western painting objectively. Typical articles and representative works ofimperial portraiture are selected, to analyze and explore portrait art in differences cultures.The analysis and interpretation of various forms of stylized Chinese and western imperialportraitures play a valuable role to the study of the western and Chinese imperial portrait inthe future.
