Along with the vigorous development of sports, English sports journalism occupies a significant place in news coverage. Consequently, the translation of sports journalism plays a crucial role in the international information communication and the transmission of language and culture. Against the background of a globalized economy driven by information, a variety of companies, especially those in the industry of public relations, put much emphases on the value of news media during the promotion and decision-making process of a company. Therefore, the translation of sports journalism embodies much meaning in both translation research and translation study. The translation report is based on the translation project the author accomplished during the internship in Burson Marsteller, Shanghai division. Sports journalism translation, falling into the category of non-literary translation, is characterized by its highly flexible wording, a variety of rhetoric figures, and diverse sentence structures, etc. In this translation report, all the passages are selected from the official websites of FIFA and WTA. The author briefs on and analyses the characteristics of the source texts, elaborates the preparation work the author has done and the difficult issues the author has encountered when doing the translation, and carefully selects the several representative sentences from the author’s translated texts to make analysis and summaries with the help of German functionalist translation theory and some other appropriate translation methods and strategies.
