| Thought pattern is a kind of underlying mechanism of the generation and development of language, which sets a bridge between culture and language. The way one uses language is a result from his choice and creation made by thought. Therefore, the process of translation is not only the shift of language form, but also that of thought pattern. The difference between thought patterns leads to the difference between language features, and brings difficulties to the translation of two languages. To solve these difficulties, the study of English-Chinese translation strategies, by analysis of the different language expressions, from the perspective of thought pattern and the relative culture, is of significant explanatory power.Based on the achievements in the field of contrastive study of English and Chinese obtained by Professor Lian Shuneng, this thesis first makes analysis of the differences between Chinese and West in thought patterns and between cultures and languages from three principal aspects:logical and abstract vs. intuitive and concrete, objective and impersonal vs. subjective and personal, synthetic vs. analytic. Then, E-C translation strategies are studied in combination with examples taken from The Cornell-Nanking Story. This study aims to make the translators with a good mastery of E-C translation strategies and its application, and thus improving the translation efficiently. |
