Different Thought Patterns Embodied In The Chinese And English Languages And C-E Translation

As widely accepted, translation is an act of cross-cultural communication. This special kind of communication involves three parties: the writer, the translator and the target language reader. Thought pattern is defined as the unity and synthesis of thought form, thought method and thought procedure one shows in the process of his/her reflection of the objective world. People from different cultures have different ways or different thought patterns in reflecting the objective world. Being influenced by the thought patterns they express the same idea in different ways, which gives rise to the hindrance to the cross-cultural communication. In the case of cross-cultural translation, however, thought patterns often lead to incoherent comprehension or even misunderstanding, as the cultural background of the original writer and that of the target reader are quite different. This highlights the translator's responsibility for taking proper translation strategies to overcome the hindrance caused by the thought patterns so as to help the target reader shake off the cultural barrier and get a coherent understanding. The thought pattern has great influence on the language and the language of a certain people reflects the intrinsic thought pattern of the people. Thus the author holds that the understanding of the language differences caused by the various thought patterns is of great importance for the C-E translator to obtain the accurate cross-cultural rendition.The thesis, by discussing some scholars'views on the relationships among thought, language and translation, helps to better understand their close connections. Meanwhile, the thesis mainly elaborates on the differences of the two thought patterns in question and the reflections of these differences in both languages. With the help of all this discussion, the author tries to gain some explanatory power and guidance for the relative C-E translation. What's more important, the thesis, by giving some unique Chinese texts and their renditions as examples, attempts to put forward some feasible translation strategies to render some Chinese expressions exclusive to Chinese way of thinking into English.
