Intralingual And Interlingual Translation Of Taiwan Film Subtitles

This study takes Verschueren’s adaptation theory as its theoretical framework, and Roman Jacobson and Henrik Gottlieb’s classification of translation as its starting point, combined with the translation methods of domestication and foreignization. It analyzes the dialogues of Taiwanese dialect (Southern Fujian dialect in Taiwan) in the subtitles of Taiwan films which have been produced since2008, and aims to show Taiwan customs, promote mutual exchanges between the Straits, and introduce Taiwan films to the world through the accurate translation of film dialogues.After an inductive analysis of relevant studies on domestic film and television, this study concludes that there is still much room in film and television works for the study of their dialect translation, especially the Southern Fujian dialect. Thus, this study divides the translation of Southern Fujian dialect dialogue in Taiwan films into intralingual translation (from Taiwanese dialect to Mandarin) and interlingual translation (from Mandarin to English). It elaborates and proves relevant viewpoints within the framework of the Pragmatic Theory of Adaptation, and comes to viable translation strategies according to the variability, negotiability and adaptability of language selection process. Such methods as transliteration plus annotation,literal translation,paraphrasing and rewriting can be employed in the process of intralingual translation, and such methods as literal translation, paraphrasing rewriting and omission can be employed in the process of interlingual translation. This study, according to the translation methods of domestication and foreignization, explores the translation method of culture-loaded words in Taiwan films, and points out that the translator should make flexible choices based on the needs of the context and communication when translating culture-loaded words, in order to minimize semantic losses on the basis of guaranteeing successful verbal communication.
