There have been fruitful studies on legal translation, academic translation and ancient Chinese-English translation, but few discusses the integration of them.Study on Criminal Litigation Practice in Tang Dynasty is an academic monograph on ancient Chinese law, whose English translation synthesizes the characteristics of these three fields above, making it a representative for multidisciplinary translation.Meanwhile,as one of the Chinese Academic Translation Projects,it answers the call of "going out" of Chinese culture, facilitates international academic exchanges and promotes the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.Based on the English translation practice of Study on Criminal Litigation Practice in Tang Dynasty, and guided by functional equivalence theory, this report summarizes principles and strategies in the English translation of academic monographs on ancient Chinese law with examples. The analysis of the source text shows three major difficulties in translation, namely, the translation of ancient Chinese, ancient legal terminology and footnote.According to the translation principles of faithfulness, accuracy, identity, etc.,the following strategies are adopted:Firstly, for ancient Chinese words, such as classical Chinese words, words of ancient dates and titles, ancient and modern synonyms,we can make intralingual and interlingual translation, interpretation, and transliteration with annotation.Secondly,to discriminate similar ancient legal terms and translate specific legal terms,we may refer to parallel texts or functional equivalents, make literal or free translation and give translation compensations.Thirdly,in the translation of footnote,it is necessary to clarify different requirements of its formats in Chinese and English academic works, and then select appropriate translation contents accordingly,so that to ensure a proper typesetting. This report is expected to be referential for theories and practices in the field of English translation of monographs on ancient Chinese laws.
