The research of the thesis mainly discusses the educationalpractice of new-type school in the central Shanxi merchants, whichwill be elaborated from the principal aspects, namely, thebackground, process, effects and etcetera. Since1840, thebackward China has been invaded by the aggression of westerncountries. The fate of the nation was in a critical and dangeroussituation, which had motives some progressive people to generatethe educational ideality of saving the nation. In Guangxu thirty-oneyears (1905), the imperial examination system was abolished andGui Mao system was promulgated. From then, the educationalreform gradually legalized. In the late Qing Dynasty, the commercialbusiness of the central Shanxi merchants developed to the summit,which provided a favorable material security for educationalreforms. Meanwhile, the businessmen had a heavy culturalfoundation for themselves and each family had private schools,which helped the merchants to enrich the educational experience.Besides, they could emulate the local Church schools. All of thisobjective situation could help the merchants lay a solid foundationfor setting up the new-typed modern education. The central Shanxi merchants founded schools and made their best to provide theexcellent educational environment for their students so that thequality of teaching improved naturally. For a time, the new-typeschools cultivated the large assembly of men of talent and becamea model for education in Shanxi. The central Shanxi merchantsfounded the new education, which is an important part of educationmodernization in Shanxi. On the one hand, they cultivated thenew-type talents for the modern society; on the other hand, theyprovided the reference for other forms of education in Shanxi, whichdeepened the degree of modernization of education in ShanxiProvince.The thesis can be divided into five parts: the first part is thetraditional education of Jinzhong in the late Qing Dynasty. The mainlycontent describes the Jinzhong official education and college fromQianlong period to Xuantong period.The second part is the practicalbackground of Jinzhong businessmen’s new education, whichrespectively elaborates it from social and personal factors. The thirdsection discusses in detail the practice of modern educationJinzhong businessmen from the primary and secondary education,women’s education and vocational education. Firstly the thesisintroduces the educational situation of the late Qing Dynasty andearlier Republic of China from the distribution of schools, curriculumand teacher resources in Jinzhong areas. Then, the thesis takes twocases of new schools founded by Jinzhong businessmen.The fourthpart is the influence of the modern education founded by Jinzhongbusinessmen will be summarized from the economic, social,educational aspects. The fifth part of the thesis is the comparison between Shanxi merchants and Anhui merchants’ educationalpractice. Both of them have the common points, such as thetraditional emphasis on education and far-sighted educationalthoughts. There are differences in the degree of educational reformsand educational contents. Through analysis, the thesis concludesthat the new educational approach embodied in the new curriculum,new teachers, and new talents so that the new educational characteris more prominent of Jinzhong businessmen.
